Farmers can relax; India to get normal monsoon this year with zero possibility of a drought, says the forecast

Farmers can breath easy as the private weather forecasting agency Skymet’s forecast for the year 2018 predicts normal monsoon in India this year. Skymet claimed that between June to September, India will witness a normal monsoon season at 100% of the long-period average (LPA) of 887 millimetres.

The forecast also predicts zero possibility of a drought or less rainfall, when the cumulative rainfall falls below 90 percent of the LPA. The threat of a drought exists when rainfall dips below 90% of the average. India has an average rainfall between 96% and 104% with a 50-year average of 89 cm.

With nearly 53% of India's agricultural produce is coming from the kharif season, which spans from June to September, an unpredictable monsoon would disrupt agricultural output and push farmers into distress. So, a favourable monsoon not only yields sufficient agricultural output, but higher incomes for farmers.
