India’s milk production increased by 20% in 3 years, says Agri Ministry
In a statement issued by the Agricultural Ministry, Minister of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Radha Mohan Singh said Milk production in the country increased by 20% from 137.7 million tonnes to 165.4 million tonnes between 2014 and 2017.
The statement also quoted the minister saying the per capita availability of milk has risen by 15.6% from 307 gms per day to 355 gms per day between the financial years 2013-14 and 2016-17.
The minister also emphasised that the Union Budget 2018 had given more weightage for animal husbandry. The government had set up an Animal Husbandry Infrastructure Development Fund (AHIDF) for financing infrastructure requirement of the animal husbandry sector, with a fund allocation of Rs 2,450 crore, said the minister.
Kisan Credit Card has been extended to the fisheries and livestock farmers, he added. Also, National Mission on Bovine Productivity in place to direct the benefits of animal husbandry schemes towards the farmers directly. India has been considered as the largest producer of milk in the world for the past 15 years.
